The Miracles of Jesus

Jesus did many miracles during His earthly ministry. His first miracle was performed at the Cana wedding at the behest of His mother. (John 2:1–11) Even though His hour had not yet come, Jesus did it for His mother.

All Jesus’ miracles testify that Jesus is the Son of God:

  • Jesus showed His power over bodily disease when He cured a leper. (Matthew 8:1–4)
  • Jesus showed His power over the forces of nature when He stilled the storm. (Matthew 8:23–27)
  • Jesus showed His power over unclean spirits when He cast out devils. (Matthew 8:28–34)
  • Jesus showed His power over death when He raised Lazarus, who had been dead for four days. (John 11:1–44)
  • Jesus showed His power to do the impossible when He fed five thousand Jews (Matthew 14:13–21) and four thousand Gentiles (Matthew 15:29–39) in two separate occasions.
  • Jesus showed His supernatural power when He walked on the sea. (Matthew 14:22–33)
  • Jesus showed His divine authority when He forgave the sins of the man with palsy. (Mark 2:3–12)

All the recipients of Jesus’ miracles had faith and trust in Jesus. The woman with an issue of blood was healed when she touched Jesus’ cloak. (Mark 5:25–34) While most of Jesus’ miracles were motivated by love and compassion, Jesus did not do any mighty work in His hometown, Nazareth, because the people there knew Him as a carpenter and rejected His teaching. (Mark 6:5–6)

All Jesus’ miracles were done in accordance with the will of God. As Christians, we often pray for miraculous healing. Do not blame God when nothing happens. Always bear in mind that it is the will of God that determines whether or not our prayers will be answered.
