On his visit to the Philippines, the Bishop of Rome was asked by a one-time homeless child, “Many children are abandoned by their parents. Many children get involved in drugs and prostitution. Why does God allow these things to happen to us?”
It is a difficult question to which many Christians and Catholics have no answer. I used to be think that karma is the answer to the question. After reading The Word of God, I now know otherwise.
God allows bad things to happen because the world belongs to Satan.
Though I Am Ruler indeed over heaven and earth and no being shall be capable of opposing Me, I do not contest My adversary’s right within the domain which is his kingdom: the terrestrial world which harbours everything that still belongs to him and where he can exercise his influence when the developing spiritual essence has reached the human stage…. Then he will pursue this spiritual essence…. the human being…. in every way in order to prevent his development and to pull him down into the abyss again, from where he had worked his way up by means of an infinitely long process…. Then he is, in fact, lord over his world…. And this explains why I allow so many disasters, why I don’t intervene where the adversary’s activities are so clearly apparent…. He has a right to you humans because you once followed him voluntarily into the abyss; and he also exercises his right in order to dominate you. But you can resist him since you possess free will. … (The Word of God, Proclamation 8691)
God does not force the outcome of events. Whether good things or bad things happen depends on man’s free will. Take the Philippines for example. It is not God’s will that its government is so corrupt. It is not God’s will that women and children are used in the sex industry. It is the government’s inaction to help women and children that spurs the proliferation of children in sex trade.
… Free will is the fundamental law of eternity…. and it is also the fundamental law in every being created by Me…. You humans must accept this explanation for the conditions on Earth which seem so imperfect to you and which only the human being’s free will can change. … (The Word of God, Proclamation 5741)
We humans are the only creations on this earth that are given intellect and free will. It is up to us how we use our God-given intellect and free will during our temporary earthly life, and we will be held accountable for it.
… However, you should always bear in mind that I will never enslave the human being’s will, that every person can think and want at his own discretion, but that every person must also accept the consequences of his will, that one day every person must give account of his will, regardless of the outcome of the implemented action. … (The Word of God, Proclamation 8683)
Bad things happen to innocent children because love has grown cold. We think only about ourselves. We do not love our neighbours as ourselves, as Jesus told us to.
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. (Luke 10:27)
If we do, we will see good things happening everywhere.
