The Torah Codes

In 1994 Doron Witztum, Eliyahu Rips and Yoav Rosenberg published the paper “Equidistant Letter Sequences in the Book of Genesis” in the scientific journal Statistical Science. In 1997 Michael Drosnin wrote The Bible Code, in which he claimed that the Bible contains hidden codes that prophesy the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

Since then people have been expressing their opinions about the Torah codes. Some believe there are no hidden codes in the Torah. Some believe that every event in the past, present and future is encoded in the Torah. Some believe that the same encoded information can be found in other texts. Some believe that the hidden codes prove the existence of God. Some believe that the encrypted codes are evidence that God authored the Bible.

I don’t believe that God tucked coded messages in the Torah; for if the Torah codes are real, it means that everything is predestined, that we can do nothing about our destiny, and that free will is an illusion.
