What Really Carries Us Forward?

According to the Bishop of Rome, if we have the path of education, the path of sports, and the path of employment, there will not be any addictions, drugs, or alcohol. His reasoning is that “school carries you forward, sport carries you forward, and work carries you forward.”

It turns out that these three paths do not always carry people forward. We hear about famous people, legal and medical professionals who abuse drugs and alcohol. We hear about athletes who have drug, alcohol or gambling problems. These people may appear successful in the eyes of the world, but they feel so empty inside that they have to turn to drugs, alcohol, gambling and the like to fill the void. Some may even commit suicide.

What really carries us forward is the love of the Father and the love of the Son. We read in John 14:23:

Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.

When we feel loved, we feel happy, we have hope, and we feel empowered to overcome any obstacle we face. When we are down, all we need to do is open our hearts to Jesus and let Him take charge.
