The sign of peace is shared between fellow worshippers during mass. Some shake hands while saying “Peace be with you”; some hug their family members and friends; some give each other the peace sign; some nod to each other; some bow to each other; some simply smile and say “Peace be with you”.
For some, the sign of peace is a gesture of fellowship. For some, the sign of peace is a distraction. For some, the sign of peace is a challenge. As for me, I consider the sign of peace an opportunity to put Jesus’ words into action. If we do not even make the effort to offer our fellow worshippers the sign of peace, how are we to follow Jesus’ teaching that we love one another?
Making fellow worshippers feel welcome is just the first step.
